On the 21.03.09 10.53 I reached the top of Cusciouszko in Australia. It is the highest point on the island Australia. Some people say that it is one of the 7 summits but it is not. Anyway, to take away any doubt, I just had to add it to my list. It was an easy match. Just a joke. It took me 72min. walking to the summit from last mecanical point from Thredbo. Those who say it is a scramble mountain,do not know what scrambe means. It is not a climb and it is not a scramble. It is an easy walk on a road. A walk on a wide road with a lot of people. Old people and children. They all reach the top of the hill. I was not very proud of my challange. The only hard about getting there was the travel from my home in Norway and to Thredbo which in fact took me 48 hours. So far,as I know, it is only Cecilie Skog and me as Norwegian who has done all the 8 of the 7summits.
If possible I will now try again to climb Everest. But this time from the South side. If possible I will also traverse and descend the north side. The plan is to do it in 2010. One main reaon why I climb is of course that it is great fun to achieve ones goal, but also to show that age is not a limit to fullfill ones dreams. Take the chance. Carpe Diem. In the meantime I think Ama Dablam is a tempting object. The one who lives will see.
On the 14.of December my wife Inger and I summited Mt.Vinson, and by doing so, it was for me the last of the 7summits and the 4. of Inger.
The 7 summits are: Aconcagua S.America Denali N.America Kilimanjaro Africa. Mt.Everest Asia Mt.Elbrus Europe Carstensz Pyramide Ocania/Australia Mt.Vinson Antartica (Kusciuszko Australia) Norwegians who has so far climbed these mountains are: Ralph Hoibakk, Arne Ness jr.,Cecilie Skog, Randi Skaug and Tore Sunde-Rasmussen.
After the climb, we hoped to get an early flight out of the earea. However the weather detriorated, and we were suck in base camp for 11 days. We only had extra food for 3 days, but the people who stayed at BC during the season, were kind and helped us with dinner every day. The storm was very strong. At the most it was more than 100 km/t and -55"C. The tents were strong enough.
11. of august was the summit day for Elbrus 5642m. My 6. of the seven summits. The whole trip down to Caucasus was made as a familytrip. My wife Inger, my stepson Michael and myself. Scaling Elbrus when dark gave us unexpected experience since we happened to see and hear the Russian bombing of Georgia, only a few kilometers away. Tracklights lightened up the area and planes rushed throug the air. Even down in the valley during night we could hear explotions. SHAME ON YOU RUSSIA !!!!!!!! Anyway we reached the summit. All in good condition. In september I will again go to Kilimanjaro as guide for a group of 12 people. Most of the group will scale the Western Breach.
In beginning of December my wife and I will try for Mt. Vinson, and then try to fullfill the 7. summits. (I am crossing my fingers).
